the mycelium frequency is the live electronic music persona of Matthew Syddall, who performs using a modular synthesiser as his main instrument.
Matthew began creating electronic music after attending the second Modulate event in Colwyn Bay. He quickly found his creative home in the world of modular synthesis, a medium that values spontaneity, texture and discovery. His journey into performance and sound was shaped by the encouragement of Rob Dickson (Etchasketch) and Matt Garnett (Sword Swinging Robot), whose support helped turn early curiosity into sustained creative exploration.
His sound draws from early influences such as 808 State, Jean Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream, and has continued to evolve through the atmospheric work of Node, Cosmic Ground and Jon Hokins. The result is immersive, evolving electronic music that exists primarily in the moment, often performed live and rarely recorded, embracing the fleeting nature of sound itself.
The name the mycelium frequency was chosen purely for its resonance and quiet presence rather than any biological reference. It reflects an understated aura that contrasts with Matthew’s own physical stature, a gentle irony mirrored in his fondness for Psilocybe semilanceata and in his fascination with transience, perception and the subtle frequencies that hum just beyond ordinary reach.
